The periheral puts the advertised services in the "mysterious" overflow area that is practically inaccessible for any device. As centrals can scan only for peripherals with specific services, they will never report a peripheral without services.

Either the overflow area is not implemented correctly or I misunderstand something but theoretically iOS devices should be able to request for that area too; however, there haven't been any reports that confirmed this. In contrary, everyone reported failure. Maybe Apple engineers can shed some light on how it is supposed to work.

Before I progress too far with an idea I have, i’d like to know if a couple of things are possible.
I already have an iOS app that can scan for a BTle device while backgrounded, what i’d like to do though is have iPhones detect each other.

The ideal way for this to work would be for the app to run as a Central scanning for devices at the same time as being a Peripheral for other iPhones to detect.

So really there is just 2 questions:
Is it possible for an iOS app to run in both Central and Peripheral at the same time? (I can get around this by having certain users as Centrals and others as Peripherals but it’s not ideal)

Is it possible for Peripheral mode to broadcast while in the background the same way Central can keep scanning in the background for hours?
