Changing peripheral services

When I want to change the characteristics in a service on a CBPeripheralManager, should I simply add a characteristic to the array of the service or do I need to republish (remove then add) the service?

If the answer is that I need to republish the service, I get errors that ‘Services/characteristics can only be added once’. So I instead create new service and characteristic objects, remove the old services and re-add. Is this correct?
