It is nothing to do with the Finder, actually. It is just a borked implementation of LaunchServices and the interfaces to it. Which is a bug. And it's not in the finder preferences file, it's somewhere else, I forget exactly where. Perhaps if you searched the archives of email@hidden you would find the answer :-)
