With my icon editor, Icon Machine, you can copy an icon image and paste it
into Photoshop and the transparency will be preserved. Likewise, when your
icon is done you can copy from Photoshop back to Icon Machine and the mask
will be automatically extracted. You don't have to go through all that
nonsense of duplicating and merging layers.
The current version of Icon Machine is 3.0b11. I plan to release 3.0b12
tomorrow.
The current version has a bug where if you paste into the main icon window,
the image and mask are not quite properly separated. To work around this,
double-click to open an editing window and paste into that. Version 3.0b12
will fix this.
