Though I've always suspected Apple's market share and critical reception
were largely based on the quality of its documentation, it is
nonetheless chilling to see this suspicion confirmed by another.
After all, the original Inside Macintosh was remarkably well written and
copious; sure enough, Apple's market share back in the mid 80s was
large. When the System 7 volume was released--the fat one--it started
falling apart the first time you bent the spine; market share was
declining correspondingly.
Documentation folks working now at Apple, you are almost solely
responsible for the company's remaining market share! A heavy yoke to
bear, but thanks for pulling! You toil with the confident knowledge
that every routine you document, every constant you describe, brings
another customer into the fold.
And to all you non-documentation folks working now at Apple: thanks for
doing whatever it is you do, too.

I really wish Apple would come out with a document for the 'system'
and then
for each app listing the various hidden command sequences.
What, and ruin a perfectly good track record? Besides, if they were
to do such a dangerous thing, it might encourage Apple to go on to
document everything properly! And that could lead to increased sales
and a bigger market share and great reviews and where would it all
end? Why, we might actually lose our elitist underdog status and then
where would we be? Part of the herd? Naw, don't hold your breath.
