ugh... I don't think that 'grep' is a comparison to what DL did.

it allowed you to pre-index all the source (as well as documentation) and so you could search these things very quickly, it would bring up the results ranked, and allow you to view many different types of documents (or launch the appropriate app for them)
The other nice thing about DL was that you were able to group the sets of documentation together and select to search whatever set (or sets) that you wanted to at the time.
Omni has (had?) OmniLibrarian for OS X.. and there is one other company that has written something similar. (http://softrak.stepwise.com/display?pkg=2016&os=20) In fact, having just looked again at Montage Librarian (the URL above).. this looks quite useful.
