Unless I misconstrue your intent, it sounds like you might not be aware
that the Mac Finder _includes_ this functionality -- when the Finder is
frontmost, check out the Finder->Preferences... menu item. It brings up
a panel which allows the user to set his/her desktop picture. Desktop
movies are not currently offered...
