I kinda see your point. Although, I think you're implying that applications
may maliciously change the desktop if access to it was public. I'm
suggesting that the user be able to install an application that explicitly
states that it changes the Desktop picture (for whatever visual effect) and
can only change the Desktop picture for the user that installed that
application. Such programs are popular in the Windows world (I mean
Wallpaper, NOT Themes). I don't think we should be wrapping Mac users in
cotton wool although applications should still be constrained within the
context of the user account that installed them. Entire markets have grown
around people "personalizing" their desktop environments. I especially don't
want to see Mac users denied something that Windows users take for granted,
for whatever political reasons.
