resource forks and Cocoa- was: custom document icons

Okay, I know it's EOLd - but AFAIK it is the only way to supply a document
with a custom icon for this individual document. I have found shareware to
do this (create icons, even OS X thumbnails, and save them to files that at
least afterwards have a resource fork). But still I want to do it
programmatically within Cocoa - is it possible to create resource forks in
Cocoa? Or is there a kind of "Carbon wrapper"? Or is there a different way
besides resource forks for custom document icons (a new, undocumented bundle
type)?

Thanks,
Dirk
