Setting the ClassPath for a java library file

Hello:
It should not be necessary to bother this list with such an elementary question.
Nevertheless, in the absence of any documentation delivered with OSX and the Developer CD that I can find which deals with the concept, I must.

The ClassPath, I understand, allows the compiler to find files in my home directory which I wish to include in a project. However, I have no idea how to set it.

Adding "~/Documents/com/dwagner/" to the general preferences in ProjectBuilder doesn't work. The compiler reports package com/dwagner/ doesn't exist.

ProjectBuilder "Help" has no entry for "classpath", or "set classpath" or "set class path" etc.
Sherlock finds no file with "classpath" in the name.
And of course there is no "manual" entry for classpath.
I've also searched the three volumes of the on line version of "Unix Unleashed".
And I've tried various commands in term.

I could continue guessing for months before I hit on the answer by accident. Why on earth is Apple so reluctant to provide adequate documentation?

Any help welcomed. Best Wishes to the List:
Douglas Wagner
