How is the actual state of the I/O-Kit ?

What I have seen till now is that IOKit is quite incomplete.
Especially USB-Support (Bulkread/write) was rather poor.
This seems to be the reason why no webcam is usable
under MACOSX. It would be great to see e.g. SANE being
ported to MACOSX. Does anybody have further infos?
