I've been following Java since the time when the only public documentation was a white paper on Sun's site. What a lot of people seem to have forgotten - or never known - is that Java was created to serve a very specific problem domain and desktop apps weren't it. It was designed - I think quite well - as a tool to create interfaces for the appliance class of devices. Peter's comment above is exactly right, and that's by design.


They've spent too much time with the 'write once, run anywhere' mantra for that to be the case.

I realize that it does have it's place in the appliance area..

but there is no question that they attempted, and failed, at the desktop.. their own purchase, and failure of conversion of the lighthouse suite is a prime example of this (as is their devman purchase, and others)
