A lot of people weighing in, mostly with opinions in line with:
Java has its place but at best it is not a complete solution
for the desktop. At worst, it simply doesn't make sense on
the desktop.

I've been following Java since the time when the only public documentation was a white paper on Sun's site. What a lot of people seem to have forgotten - or never known - is that Java was created to serve a very specific problem domain and desktop apps weren't it. It was designed - I think quite well - as a tool to create interfaces for the appliance class of devices. Peter's comment above is exactly right, and that's by design.
