I found out about them by reading *all* of the documentation once
through.
This was much easier back in the day because we had really
paper-bound documentation. You could sit and flip through the book and
such as you were doing other 'research'. With the prevalence of
electronic only documentation now, that is much harder. I loved my
properly bound NeXTStep manuals (the white ones.. and then the black and
golds, and finally the black and whites)..
With that you had a single location to go for information that was
at least narrowed down...

Yeah, but John, these are normal people in all likelihood, not a
hard core geek like you.. :-)
