Before placing a window you should always make sure it's going to appear on
screen. If not, revert placement locations to default settings.
Generally, if someone's second monitor is unavailable, they know it and are
more concerned with viewing the window (at all) than with its preferred
placement. They expect to be able to use the window and expect its
placement to change.
My defaults (in OS9) are compat. with single monitor setups -- there's no
way you can guess how someone would want window positions set w/ multiple
monitors.
On a side note, Final Cut Pro has a couple of nice window position presets
in its menu which could be used to get windows back if lost.
