I'd appreciate any comments on the return-on-investment of learning

At this point I have a basic grounding but very little experience in
C and no OO background to speak of.
Like any of the Algol family of languages (Pascal, C, etc.), learning
one will make it easier to learn another.
Similarly, that's true with Smalltalk-derived OO languages
(Smalltalk, Obj-C, and, to a lesser extent, Python).
I don't think that there's any reason to learn Smalltalk per se
unless you want to -- and I don't think it'll reduce your total
learning curve.
The one thing Smalltalk will do, which will involve a lot of brain
pain, is that it is an OO-only language (unlike ObjC, which is also
procedural, and Python which is also procedural and functional) and
you'll *have* to learn the paradigm.
