You can use cocoa and carbon together peacefully, for the most part.
Carbon Events don't work in cocoa apps, and I am not sure how Cocoa
works in a pure carbon app.
But most, if not all, Cocoa apps use carbon here and there.

Ok, I read over and over why one should use Cocoa or Carbon or Ovaltine or
whatever. My question is: "Why can't we all just get along?" To be
serious, there are serious benefits and limitations to both, but if you
are just programming for OS X, there is no reason that you can't mix them
in your program to your hearts delight. Ok, there may be interface
problems, for non-interface code, you should be able to use whichever you
want. Also, mix in some Java with the the Java-bridge (an underestimated
hugely beneficial piece of cocoa). While youre at it, some
POSIX-compliant C code wouldn't hurt. So, in the end, it shouldn't be a
hard decision what environment to use. Naturally, you use Cocoa, and then
fill it up with as much non-cocoa code as you want.
Personally, I'm waiting for apps that can run in aqua or an x-window
environment. Given Cocoa's amazing api mixing ability, this shouldn't be
to difficult to come up with something sounding like coffee to do this.
