Modem / irda access

Hi

Has anyone found a way to access the irda / modem port in OSX. The example provide in "Accessing Hardware From Applications" doesn't seem to work.

It finds the modem port and I can change the program so it finds the irda (cu.irda) port. But how do I send and receive data???

Any clues
