Mmm, looks like another encoding problem with mail, this time :-)

Instead of "i" you should read "e" accute (&eacute;). So, I'm trying to strip diacritical marks, but converting to ASCII doesn't seem to work.

Sorry, now I see what you mean :-)

Putting the character into the program is a bit problematic because
the result could depend on the encoding of the source code.

But you are right, this doesn't work as advertised. Even the example
suggested in the documentation doesn't work. File a bug report.
