Uli,

You are probably not typical in this respect. I would argue that in most cases, people typically want to open on Tuesday the document "in progress" with the same app as on Monday.

A very thorough discussion about that topic has been going on on Macintouch. The start of it is at URL http://www.macintouch.com/mosxreaderreports12.html. This is a general discussion about MacOS X, but you can search for "extensions" to focus only on that topic.

This discussion is at the user level (power user maybe), not developer. There are arguments for and against, some very thoughtfully articulated. But on average, it seems that a majority of Mac users have developped patterns of use which take advantage of type/creators. Those patterns are different from those developped by people who grew up in a Unix or Windows world.

In order to form an opinion, I would suggest that we keep our minds open to the fact that not all people adopt the same patterns of life, and that we go and read that discussion.

I did, and my opinion at this point in time, is that type/creators are genuinely useful, in a way that file extensions alone cannot replace.

Waiting for nirvana...

Jean-Denis

Certainly not everyone. I, for one, have always found the
Type/Creator issue one of the most annoying features (a bug,
actually) of Classic Mac OS for several reasons:

1. It is downright stupid to assume that because I used app XY to
edit my doc the last time, I will also want to use app XY the next
time. In my workflow, this is more often not the case than it is.
(If I want to go on editing the doc with the same app, I simply
leave it opened in this app till I'm ready...)

Bye
Uli
