Write up a bug/feature request. I plan to do this soon too is that
sometimes I find that I'm accidentally hitting F12 when I press
delete (which as you'd expect is an often used key). There should
be a convenient method to turn it off at least.
I also press F12 a lot by accident... but I am still glad that it
opens the optical drive. The actual button on mine hasn't worked for
some time, and I previously had to use the button in iTunes, which
was much less convenient. Fn-F12 seems like a good idea... It's more
difficult to press and impossible to do with one hand, but it would
stop people from complaining. Although a newbie might be in a panic
(like I was when I discovered the iTunes button didn't work in 10.1)
trying to figure out how to open the drive.
I think it would be a bad idea to have an app using the F12 key and
shifting the eject button elsewhere unless there is something in the
preferences for it (or System Preferences) which would let the user
decide which key opens the drive and which key is for your
application. Certainly it shouldn't be done without some kind of very
visible warning that the eject key is now F11, because it's quite
stressful to suddenly discover that you don't know how to open your
DVD-ROM drive. Especially when you've installed 10.1 but not the new
devtools, as happened to me. :)
