Well, when I am in PB and I click the Help -> Cocoa Help menu item
([help cocoa]) I get a page that looks identical to Apple's developer
help site. Top middle column is Getting Started and the first link in
this column is a link New To Cocoa. The third is the OOP and Obj-C
"book." The top left column is Related Resources and the Sixth link is
the Vermont Recipes tutorial. When I click Vermont Recipes my web
browser comes up at the StepWise.com web site -- where a lot of useful
articles are located.
I found these things with a minimum of effort; did not even launch a web
browser or a search engine. Yes, I did this when I started doing some
real Cocoa development two weeks ago.
I personally think Erik has a totally valid point on this one.

Hmm, well then it looks as if the problem is that newbies don't know
it's there.
Perhaps links to some of these resources should be made at the same
place where the subscribe info for this list is?

There is no shortage of getting started documentation. There is just
an
unwillingness to search with google or check out Apple's web page or
go to
Stepwise (my personal favorite)
I'd more readily argue that people feel a little lost when first
getting into Cocoa, I know I was.
The "getting started FAQ" you describe should include exacly one
sentence:
"Search with google."
:-)
But I'm afraid that it would make them feel like they're left on a limb.
