Hmm, well then it looks as if the problem is that newbies don't know it's there.

Perhaps links to some of these resources should be made at the same place where the subscribe info for this list is?

The "getting started FAQ" you describe should include exacly one sentence:
"Search with google."

But I'm afraid that it would make them feel like they're left on a limb.
