Hi folks,
there seems to be some confusion about the availability of hfstar, which
continues to be available from www.metaobject.com. I have to admit that
some of the confusion is my own fault because I had moved it to a
different download directory without posting to the world. So it is now
back at
http://www.metaobject.com/downloads/macos-x/
(source code distribution). To be posted soon is a new version that
implements Markus Hitter's suggestions for not archiving empty/default
resource forks/finder-info.
One known issue with the current version is that it doesn't preserve the
bundle bit for directories. This means that, for example, the Acrobat
Reader 5.0 application bundle will revert to a plain directory after
unarchiving. This can easily be fixed/prevented by appending the .app
extension.
I wanted to check how hfspax handles this, since documentation for the
setattrlist() calls seems to not even be forthcoming but simply MIA, but
alas it seems that hfspax does not come with source code, and also
segfaults when unpacking an archive of the Acrobat Reader 5.0 bundle it
created.

I am pleased to report the release of version 1 final candidate 4 of

still the only Mac OS X native archive tool that has full support for
resource forks, Finder info, OS X permissions, and the whole richness
of OS
