Nope. It looks like any time that we use NSDefaultRunLoopMode it connects to the WindowServer. Switching runloop modes seems to solve the problem. Go figure.

No. Using any of the AppKit that relates to the GUI does, though. Does it work from a Foundation tool with no AppKit?
