But I thought we just agree on the fact that the file owners of
all type release all the top level object anyways, so how is it
special for window controllers?

Right. The only "special" thing is from the programmer's way:
if he uses an
NSWindowController, the releasing is taken care for. If he uses
anything
other, he has to do it himself.
In a sense, this is similar to a difference between using NSView or
NSImageView for displaying an image: both do that, but in the
former case you
have to implement it, whilst in the latter one it's done for you.
