Just wondering if anyone would use this in their software.
In a word: YES!
If we could get a single, standard implementation, it would be
fantastic. Particularly if we could convince Apple to ship it with OS X.
Maybe have a single recommendation for software that uses this: please
advertise the fact.

YES. My apps would definitely implement it, if the app gained enough
support. Third party support in SU would be even greater.
