I was talking offlist with Rob Rix, and thought some things should be mentioned
The only problem I see with this is developers that might abuse it.
It would be nice if Apple kept strict control over it, so the
developer had to go through hoops to get it working. I'd hate to have
someone like gadget software get ahold of this.
Not sure if you followed the whole gadget story (not all did), but
they keep changing their name and promising wonderful things that
just aren't possible. So it would be hard for regular users to spot
them out (even some savvy users).
Then Rob said:
Well, stuff like that, we probably can't avoid. Just publish warnings
about software and stuff?
Anyhow, it wouldn't be our fault, because we're not the ones selling
the fraudware. Still annoying, though.
And I say:
This is true, however how many people dislike MS because of all these
"viruses" that exploit their products and only their products?
Exactly why I suggest apple make developers go through hoops ;)
Probably have them register with apple with a valid ADC account, and
then register the creator code with the Application (or Bundle
Identifier)
Then Rob said:
Apple already lets third-parties use Software Update. One, anyhow.
Microsoft. I got the new version of IE that way.
So I responded with:
Apple partners have gone through the hoops already. So it should be
safe to trust them (Microsoft and Aladdin Systems are two I have seen
in SU, at least on Mac OS 9)
