To be useful on the Macintosh, it needs more than a real human interface. It also needs support for things like aliases. If I install a piece of software, decide to move it elsewhere on my machine, and then check for updates the update engine should still find it.

Unfortunately, Cocoa doesn't any built-in support for aliases.

Fortunately, I threw together a simple class for handling alias records in Cocoa applications. See <http://bdistributed.com/Projects/BDAlias/index.html> for details. It's under a BSD license.
