Well in my little pieces of software I have fiddled with, they all use
simple version control by checking against an HTTP .txt file that containts
a simple version number. It compares its own version against this number,
and if the web one is higher, than it lets the user know that it can be
downloaded.

Simple, clean and nothing fancy. Works for my apps.

Of course, should there be a way to centralize this with a single app, or
maybe a framework that does this automatically, that would be nice.
