Rootless X11 is no picnic to install (I'm not counting Tenon's
overpriced joke, btw). It has an added overhead. It is less
integrated into the OS X experience (e.g. nonstandard looking window
borders, only one icon in the dock for all X11 apps, inability to
have XFree86 applications as double-clickable bundles, etc).
Finlay, your posting is confusing. When I first read it, I thought
you were talking about Xtools:

Upon a more careful reading, I realized you were talking about XAqua,
the open source rootless X11, which I agree has some problems. In
case others made the same mistake I did, I thought I would correct
the record and describe Xtools pricing and features.
Xtools is very well integrated into Aqua. It won two Apple Design
Awards for its integration. Every X application can be minimized
into the dock. It lets you make any X app into a double-clickable
application. X apps can be easily added to a menu and it uses the
keychain to store ssh passwords for easy launching of remote apps.
The price for students is $99 and for others, starting at very small
quantities, it is also $99.
That said, I think your project is a good one -- we're actually doing
something quite similar. :-)
