See, thats the problem, the former frontmost window remains frontmost
to the user, the widgets are NOT deactivated as they should be. The
user has absolutely no clue which window is key.

I guess we are starting to disagree here: since Cmd-w closes key _window_
(the 'w' being evidently a shortcut for _w_indow and not _f_ile or
_d_ocument), it very definitely _SHOULD_ be able to close any (closable)
window which happens to be key when the shortcut is pressed.
