Hello ...
Just a thought:
How about something like "Put Away (Document)" in the File menu,
and "Close Window" in the Window menu? For those apps where the
actions blend, there will simply be two ways to accomplish the
same task; for those where the actions are distinct, the menu
item names will alleviate any confusion.
I guess this discussion really belongs in the UI list, but this
is an issue about which developers need to have a clear sense.
By the way: If a "Close Window" item *did* go into the "Window"
menu, *where* would it go? Mail, ProjectBuilder, and TextEdit have
"Close, Zoom, Minimize", which screws up the stoplight order.
Interface Builder has "Minimize" then "Close", suggesting the
reverse of the stoplight order. I advocate proper stoplight order:
"Close, Minimize, Zoom" (along with stoplight icons to the left of
the items?).
Whatever happens with the "Close Window" item, it seems to me that
"Zoom Window" should always appear with "Minimize Window". I'm
guessing that "Minimize" appears so often simply to advertise the
key equivalent for the command; "Zoom"'s lack of key equivalent,
correspondingly, negates the need to take out advertising menu
item? But why give two of the fundamental window operations fully
three distinct methods of invocation each and leave the third with
just the clickable widget (which might be off-screen)?
