Yay!
Can you say whether they will include AppleScript Studio (ASS?), or
will that be a separate download (or even, say it ain't so, a paid
product)?
If you read the 10.1 info on the apple site, they say ASS will be
available 'soon' and I suspect this will be a further away soon than
the 10.1 developer stuff :) However, I think Apple really have got it
right releasing the developer stuff for free because its the
developers who make the products that attract the users.
Remember back to when Microsoft was just a small company with bad
sales ethics, poor code and great pr (unlike today when they are a
large company <g>). Languages were packages free with platforms often
and the wealth of software that was produced was truly huge.
Microsoft charges for its development environment - and charges a
lot. It puts people off (or they pirate it).
TBH, I wouldn't mind really if Apple did charge a modest sum - like
20 or 30 ukp - for the developer cd because the software and
documentation, as well as the support on the developer site is very
good. However, by giving it away with every copy of os X they are
saying to a whole new mac generation 'Here, try this, you might like
it'.
On a side note, I just want to say 'thankyou' to the apple people I
know are reading these groups for the free developer tools and the
cheap up-to-date program apple runs. In times when Microsoft has
changed it's licensing in such a way as to cost most businesses over
20% more than before and forces them to upgrade every couple of
years, Apples policy has stood out as a better way. Everyone I have
discussed this with condemns Microsofts choice and considers Apple's
the much more enlightened way. Thankyou.
Robert
