Select membership is rather steep for me (as it is per year) but the

here on the student program - what does 'selected' mean?

Students get a monthly mailing that includes CDs with SDKs, basically all the docs you can find on their website (minus technotes and such), random tools like MPW and Codewarrior for Java, and you get free copies of all system software releases, including the paid ones. For instance, in the 2+ years I've been signed up, I got 8.5, 8.6, 9.0, 9.1, and OS X for no cost. Students don't generally get seeds, although they did make a couple of exceptions by giving students a copy of DP4 and the public beta. You can also enter to win a free pass to WWDC and you get a once-per-lifetime hardware discount. All in all, it's a pretty sweet deal for $99 a year.
