As one of the readers who first criticized "Learning Cocoa" It's been
interesting to see all the responses. I was especially interested in Bill
Cheeseman's defense of the book, since I find the "Vermont Recipes" to be
altogether a much better introduction to Cocoa.
From comments on this list and other boards, I think a disappointment with
Learning Cocoa for beginner probably comes from over expectation with Cocoa
development environment. I think a lot of the people expected Cocoa to be
as easy to learn as Real Basic from scratch, which is clearly not the case.
With Real Basic you could go from scratch and be running simple programs
easily, but with Cocoa you already have to be fluent in C or java to be
able to even do anything. In Cocoa, you need to be familiar with
target/action, delegate, MVC and other patterns before you can make any
significant program. So, I think the frustration for beginner might be
because of over-hyping its simplicity. Cocoa does present a steep learning
curve compared to Real Basic.
These are only my observation from frustrated beginners.
