I think most would say that the program should never take away controls
without some action by the user. I don't think most would have a
problem with the user being able to click a button to hide/show parts of
the UI that might be relevant at the moment, as long as it doesn't take
away important controls at the same time.
Tab views themselves can be useful, but are often overused to the point
of confusion. I think the worst case I've seen is JBuilder, which has a
tab view inside a tab view inside a tab view at one point.
