Strings crossing the Java bridge

I am programming a Cocoa database application in Objective-C, where the database interface is done in Java (JDBC).

I found that strings that is crossing the Java bridge to NSString is losing the Unicode coding, making my norwegian characters appear funny. I wonder how you guys is handling this.
