Speaking from experience, yes, they will.
Invariably, they will either not remember they made the change
(especially if the change was made following someone else's
instructions/patcher) or not correlate the current problems to the
change that was made.
I would not have expected this (and we haven't had that experience with
our products yet).
Still, we will probably include the nib files in the self test routines
that we've been planning for our products anyway. This would allow us to
recognize this problem immediately, should it ever be the reason for a
customer support incident.
I still don't think that it is a good idea to try to make a nib file
"private", though.
Quite the opposite, I think the ability of customers to modify the nib
files is a very good thing. Not only can it make a product more
compelling in certain situations, it also can prevent some customer
support issues from arising in the first hand. For example, a while ago
we've had certain problems with OmniWeb that they did not fix for a long
time. We were able to patch around the problem in the nib files, and we
happily did do for each new OmniWeb version. The results: one more
satisfied customer (ilink) and one less tech support issue to deal with
for the Omni group.
With kind regards
Piers
