I think it still needs a little work, as I've had some suggestions
as to how the accessors might be made thread safe without some of
the overhead given in the solution, but I haven't been able to
concentrate on it for a while.

etc. especially any suggestions for improvement, please feel free

I think it would be useful to have a list of these various
accessors with all the pros and contras as a reference. I don't
think anything like "this style was blessed by Ali Ozer and
therefore all you noobs should use it" would be helpful for the
community in the short or long run. I know I can live without the
dicussion of "he he, you _obviously_ don't know how to write
_proper_ accessors" ...
