Print Dialog in Mac OS X

I might be missing something very clever.

Is it the expected and designed behavior that in Mac OS X, when you print a document, the Print dialog does not indicate anywhere the number of pages in the document? It's just saying "From: 1 to: 1" when you're printing a 100 pages document.

I filed a bug report on this for a OS X seed but I just discovered that this strange behavior is in 10.1 too.

Since the number of pages is provided via the knowsPageRange method, I'm a bit surprised the best answer the Print dialog can give is from 1 to 1.

I'm seeing this behavior in both Cocoa and Carbon applications. With a network printer connected and no printer connected.
