Hi all,
It been suggested that this is off-topic, so I'll withdraw my question.
It seems that there is strong feeling for Obj-C on this mailing list
and that Apple's claims about Java as a first-class citizen in Mac OS X
are a bit of a smoke screen (from the URL I have been sent -
http://www.bignerdranch.com/Resources/Java.html).
I apologise to those I've offended with my "proprietary" comment - I
really meant "not widely used on other platforms".
To me, Obj-C is not really a re-usable skill - there is no call for Mac
developers in my home town. So, it looks like I should bite the bullet
and learn Cocoa/Obj-C purely as a hobby, or just use C++ and Carbon.
I think you are missing a very important point: You said you have
professional experience in C and C++. Learning the basics (syntax) of
Objective-C should take you about 1 hour. To learn the necessary
semantics to write amazing Cocoa-Apps using Objective-C will take you
about half a day. Even if you can't reuse that particular skill
somewhere else: It doesn't hurt and is a very small investment.
You didn't say if you know Java, but even assuming you do: You will
spend way more time learning Foundation, AppKit etc., those will take
days, if not weeks. The time you "waste" by learning Objective-C will be
more than made up for by better integration, documention and support.
Trust the people on this list and invest just 1 day.
