Hi,

I'm not really interested in learning a proprietary language, so I'm
looking for books or other reference material on Cocoa using Java.

start out by identifying the fact that obj-c is not proprietary, and
even if you learn cocoa using java you will be learning mostly
proprietary stuff, which is the frameworks.

Well, I think what he means by proprietary is that Objective-C can only be
used on OS X and no other platform? Where as java, C, C++, etc can be used
on any platform.

We should cur him some slack as my last name suggests <grin>

Objective-C is not proprietary or OS X specific.
The Cocoa frameworks are proprietary and OS X specific (not
counting the GNUstep implementation). I have Objective-C
building and running just fine under Linux with the standard
GCC distribution.
