Making either type of file is trivially simple.
The difference is, gzip came bundled with my Mac, for free. Why should I
pay for something that offers zero benefit - for me, or for the end user
of my applications?
Much more important difference is that .gz is an open format and can be
unpacked whatever way I (the user) want: in Terminal, or via Opener.
With .sit, I am stick with the disaster of proprietary and bug-swarming
Stuffit Expander.
