I'm sure that there is a segment of the Mac population that would refuse to
download an application they want to try out because it's not compressed
using an open format. However, the size of that population is probably
close to 1...

And technically, you could decompress .sit file from the command line.

Yes. The StuffIt product line of pay/share/freeware has been a complete
disaster for the Macintosh platform.
