The fact that there is no way to hide a view in Cocoa is a consious design

I thought that would have been the case. Its normally a good idea.

In fact it has been the way to do it by the Humans Interface books by Apple.

Do you know how I can get a view/control like those spinning arrows in Mail?

The spinning arrows in Mail is a carbon control, you can use that
or you can use the spinning arrows from the Omni's Group Extensions
to the Appkit.
