So that won't work
I just gave it a try, and Stuffit Expander do cut the file names. It's lame
to see that they are unable to use the write system calls about 24 months
after the release of Mac OS X.
I have an even sader news : it seems that Stuffit Magic Menu can handle
these long file names, because it seems to me that it's a wrapper of the
unix tools.
If anyone has Magic Menu installed, just open the console, and untar and
unzip something via this Menu, you'll see that it launches gunzip and tar...
But I can't test it anymore since all the stuffit-deluxe package was so
lame, and put me in trouble every time I downloaded a file that I simply
uninstalled it from my computer at work, even though I had it for free...

All this to say that even if I don't like dmgs, I haven't found a better
distribution solution for joe-user who only has got stuffit-expander on his
computer...
