OTOH even Apple goes against what Apple recommends (last I heard,

iChat violates numerous rules, this one is no exception. Please don't
say "Apple does it, so I'm allowed to do it too", rather say "The
iChat team should read the Mac OS X interface guidelines and try
again".
I'm afraid I get a bit sick of the HIG police. It's great that the
guidelines exist, but let's not take it as the be all and end all.
Sometimes rules are there to be broken. Do what looks good and makes
sense, as long as it doesn't make your app confusing. Just ignore the
sticklers: that's what Apple do, and quite right too, I think. Give
your users a little bit of credit: they won't run for the door if your
window is metallic rather than standard. Mac users just aren't that
stupid ;-)
