I don't have Jag, so I haven't used the new PB yet, so I may be talking out of my butt here... :-)

With that in mind - have you tried referring to it as ${VER} instead of just $VER? That's how the built-in variables are referred to, at least in the PB version I'm using. I wouldn't be surprised if user-defined variables are referred to using the same syntax.
