Menu Items and that check picture

I'm working with an app that has a dock menu and a few selectable
items. To show they are selected I would expect a check image to show
by the item (signifying NSOnState), but it seems the that I may have to
set the image? I thought the image was fairly universal yet I need to
recreate it?
Any thoughts?
